Ireland is where you can find some of the most breathtaking, captivating landscapes, including fairytale castles and stunning cliffs. It's not surprising that the most unique destinations to visit in Ireland include popular attractions like the Cliffs of Moher, but there's a lot more to explore beyond these popular spots.

Below are 11 distinctive destinations to explore in Ireland.

1) McDermott's Castle (Roscommon)

There is one of the most distinctive castles in Ireland in Roscommon, located on the stunning Lough Key, not far from the small village of Boyle.

The area is about 10 kilometres in length and has a round shape. Lough Key boats have access to more than 30 islands scattered across its icy waters.

One of the islands is appropriately called "Castle Island," and there are the remains of McDermott's Castle.

2) Doon Fort (Donegal)

The incredibly distinctive Doon Fort in Donegal is a Western Stone Fort at the centre of Lough Adoon near Nairn, along with Portnoo.

The fort is connected to two families that include those of the Breslins as well as the O'Boyles. It is believed that the Breslins resided there during the 5th century, and the O'Boyles occupied the fort until it was sunk into ruin.

While Doon Fort is situated on private property, during the summer months, the family that owns the land rents small boats to people who want to go there.

3) The Serpent's Lair (Galway)

While it's often called "the serpent's lair" and "the wormhole," the actual name of our next location will be "Poll na bPeist."

It's situated on Inis Mor, the largest of the three Aran Islands, located off the shores of Galway.

The finely cut edges of the pictures above appear as if they were cut by a huge tool, but the wormhole was actually created naturally.

4) Bull Rock (Cork)

There's a good chance that you've heard of Dursey Island in Cork (yep, this is the island accessible via a tiny cable vehicle).

Dursey Island is situated at the southernmost tip of the majestic Beara Peninsula in the even more powerful West Cork region. West Cork.

On the western side of the island are the three rock formations: Cow Rock, Bull Rock, and Calf Rock. Bull Rock, pictured above, appears to be a whip from the Pirates of the Caribbean movie.

5) The Caves of Keash (Sligo)

We believe that many of the most desirable destinations to visit in Ireland are located on the west coast of the country.

There are few places with as ancient a past as the Caves of Keash in County Sligo. The caves here are an ancient tomb-cluster that is thought to predate the Pyramids of Egypt by a staggering 500-800 years!

Geological investigations were conducted during the early 1900s and revealed that "early man" used to reside in and use the caves in Keash.

It has also been proven that wolves, bears, Arctic lemmings, and other animals have been a part of the area in the past.

6) The Croaghaun Cliffs (Mayo)

A lot of people misunderstand Slieve League Cliffs in Donegal as the most awe-inspiring sea cliffs in Ireland. The cliffs of Slieve League are the highest sea cliffs found on the entire island of Ireland.

The highest cliffs found in Ireland are located at Croaghaun and are located at Achill Island in Mayo, with an impressive 688 m (2,257 feet).

It's interesting to note that they're the third-highest in Europe. The cliffs are located on the northern slopes of Croaghaun Mountain and can be admirably viewed if you climb up to the top.

7) Marsh's Library (Dublin)

Many visitors to Dublin usually go to one library, the Long Room in Trinity College. There's another frequently overlooked library that's just as in some cases, more historic.

There's Marsh's Library. The longest-running library in Ireland is hidden in the shadow of St. Patrick's Cathedral in Dublin. It was established in 1707.

Marsh's house has more than 300 manuscripts. If you go to Marsh's, look out for holes that were created in bookcases during the Easter Rising.

8) Largy Waterfall (Donegal)

Although you'll see Largy Waterfall appear in many guides on the best destinations you can visit within Ireland, very few guides contain the essential warnings.

Although Donegal's hidden waterfall appears like something from the Jurassic Park movie, it's essential to know how to interpret tides because if you are stuck in this spot when the tide is rising, and you can't get out, there's no escape.

The hidden treasure is on the Slieve League peninsula in Donegal. The waterfall is situated in Largy, the village, which lies within the townships of Killybegs as well as Kilcar.

9) Leap Castle (Offaly)

The notorious Leap Castle is 6 kilometres north of Roscrea in Coolderry. The castle is believed to have the highest number of haunted houses of any building in Ireland, and television shows such as Most Haunted have been filmed here in the past.

Legend has it that a woman wearing red wanders through the castle using a silver blade in the evening after it gets dark. A further explanation for why Leap Castle is said to be haunted is the discovery of a mysterious underground dungeon that contained hundreds of human bones.

10) Spike Island (Cobh)

The tiny village of Cobh is regarded as one of the most beautiful locations in Ireland by many visitors.

Yet, only a few people take the ferry trip towards nearby Spike Island. In the last 1300 years, Spike Island has been the home of the monastery, a fortress with a size of 24 acres, and the biggest convict depot in the world.

In the past, the island was home to convicts prior to the penal transport. This is where the name "Ireland's Alcatraz" was born.

11) The Cloughmore Stone (down)

There's the Cloughmore Stone located in Kilbroney Park near Rostrevor in County Down, a place that also houses an observation point dubbed "Kodak Corner."

Known locally as the "big stone," the Cloughmore Stone can be described as a huge granite boulder that weighs around 50 tonnes.

It's perfectly perched on the mountain's ridge at an altitude of more than 1,000 feet and offers stunning views of Carlingford Lough and the Mourne Mountains.

While you won't get this information on lists of the top places to go in Ireland, the place and all of County Down never fail to surprise visitors.

You can visit these beautiful places while on your world travels.
